It’s National Text Your Ex Day – Why Fall Has Us Reaching for Our Exes

Posted

It starts innocently enough: a song you haven’t heard in years, an old photo you didn’t mean to find, a quiet night when the group chat has gone silent. Then comes the thought: I wonder how they’re doing.

On Oct. 30, National Text Your Ex Day gives that thought a holiday—and maybe a little cover. But the season may be doing some of the work. The days are shorter, the year is starting to feel finite, and the holidays are close enough to make being single—or simply being alone on a Tuesday—feel more noticeable.

There’s a psychological reason the mind reaches backward when it wants connection. In a 2008 study, researchers Constantine Sedikides, Tim Wildschut and their colleagues found that nostalgia can help restore feelings of social connection. That doesn’t mean texting an ex will make you feel better. It may help explain why an old relationship can suddenly seem like the most familiar place to turn.

Memory also knows how to edit. It brings back the laugh, the late-night conversation, and the feeling of being understood. It may take longer to replay the argument that ended the relationship. A text feels casual, but sometimes it’s carrying a much bigger question: Do I still matter to you?

Astrology has a language for this backward glance, too. Oct. 30 falls in Scorpio season, which astrologers associate with intimacy, emotional intensity and what remains unresolved beneath the surface. It’s a symbolic reading, not a scientific explanation—but it fits the mood of a day built around revisiting old feelings.

Before sending “Hey, stranger,” it may help to ask what you’re hoping the message will bring back. The person? The attention? The comfort of being known? You don’t have to judge the answer. Just be honest with yourself about what you want from the conversation—and whether that’s something your ex can actually give you.
