Boston police officers shot and killed a man armed with a "very large knife" in Brighton Friday morning, according to police.

The officers were called to a home on Selkirk Road just after 7 a.m. for a report of a man threatening to harm himself. Police Commissioner Michael Cox said the man refused to drop the knife. Officers spoke with him for about 20 minutes, but the man then charged at police and he was shot once in the stomach, Cox said at a news conference.

The man was rushed to the hospital and later died, police said. He has not been identified.

Another person was inside the home during the incident but was brought out safely by officers.

None of the police officers were hurt but two of them were taken to a hospital for evaluations. The officer who shot the man has not been identified. Cox said he's been on the force for a little more than two years.

The commissioner said other officers at the scene had Tasers but said it's not clear yet if the officer who fired his gun had one.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office is investigating the incident.

"We commend our officers swift response and efforts to de-escalate an incredibly dangerous and highly hostile situation that ultimately resulted in an officer having to discharge his firearm," the Boston police union said in a statement.

In a statement, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said, "My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy."

"Our first responders and police officers regularly face difficult and dangerous situations," Wu said. "We are grateful for their service and thinking of the officers who were impacted by today's events."
